Michigan Youth Opportunities Initiative - MYOI

The Michigan Youth Opportunity Initiative (MYOI) is a statewide program that helps youth transitioning from foster care achieve independence by providing training, financial literacy, mentorship, and support for education, employment, housing, and health, using community partnerships to offer resources like Individual Development Accounts (IDAs) with matching funds, life skills coaching, and Youth Boards for leadership, improving outcomes as they age out of the system.

Key Goals:

  • Improve success in education, employment, housing, health, and community engagement for youth in care.
  • Provide stability and skills for adulthood.

How it Works:

  • Partnership: A collaboration between the Jim Casey Youth Opportunities Initiative and the Michigan Dept. of Health & Human Services.
  • Eligibility: Youth in foster care, typically ages 14-23, who have experienced out-of-home placement due to abuse, neglect, or juvenile justice involvement.
  • Training: Workshops on financial literacy, life skills (housing, employment, health), and asset building.
  • Individual Development Accounts (IDAs): Youth save money, which MYOI matches dollar-for-dollar (up to $1000/year) to purchase assets like a car or education.
  • Stipends: Payments for participating in meetings and events, encouraging saving.
  • Youth Boards: Provide leadership, advocacy, and a platform for youth to share their stories.
  • Community Partner Boards: Local groups offering support, discounts, and connections for youth.

Services Provided:

  • Mentorship & Coaching.
  • Financial Education & Assistance.
  • Referrals to services.
  • Support for housing, employment, & education.

In essence, MYOI provides comprehensive, community-driven support to help young people leaving foster care build stable, independent futures.
