Increasing access and success for youth from foster care

Fostering Success Michigan builds a statewide network that connects youth with foster care experience to education, opportunity, and support—transforming educational and career outcomes across Michigan.

Our mission is to increase access and success in postsecondary education among Michigan’s students with experience in foster care through the building of a holistic network that insulates (i.e., strengthens protective factors and reduces risks) the education to career “pipeline” for students from foster care.

The Need

Most of the resources that help young people succeed in high school, access college or technical training, and transition into careers exist outside the child welfare system. Child welfare is designed to ensure safety and permanency—not educational success or workforce readiness.

Fostering Success Michigan fills this gap. By aligning students, educators, and cross-sector partners in a statewide network, FSM connects youth with experience in foster care to the resources and support they need to succeed in education and build meaningful careers.

Our Approach

Fostering Success Michigan brings together the partners and resources across Michigan that support youth with experience in foster care as they pursue education and careers. We build statewide collaboration in three key areas:

Access and Navigation of Existing Resources:

Helping students access and navigate the education-related financial supports available to youth with experience in foster care across Michigan.

Recruiting, training and convening Campus Support Programs:

Training and equipping campus-based professionals statewide with best practices and resources to effectively support students with experience in foster care.

Building a Statewide Network of Support:

Connecting professionals to a network of experts across the seven life domains that influence education and career success. No one needs to be an expert in everything—effective support comes from being connected to the right expertise.

Our Network

Our network operates through strong statewide partnerships among professionals, institutions, organizations, and advocates committed to improving educational and career outcomes for youth and young adults with experience in foster care. Through shared learning, co-developed tools, regular convenings, and aligned strategies across education, child welfare, and community systems, we break down silos and leverage collective strengths—creating a coordinated, high-impact system of support for students across Michigan.
